UPS integration

UPS, native to your Canadian WMS, including cross-border.

Domestic Canadian shipping plus full US cross-border in one workflow. Rate shopping, label generation, commercial invoices, tracking writeback. Built for Canadian operators shipping across town or across the border.

What this integration does

Every UPS workflow, native to CanShip.

UPS is the workhorse for cross-border ecommerce out of Canada. We built our integration around the realities Canadian operators face: CAD-quoted rates, customs paperwork generation, and bilingual labels.

Every service

UPS Standard, Express, Express Saver, Worldwide Saver

Every UPS commercial service available out of Canada is supported. Choose at the order level, set defaults at the SKU or client level, or let rate shopping pick the cheapest eligible service for each shipment.

Live rates

Real-time rate shopping in CAD

UPS Canada rates pulled live from UPS's API for every shipment, sized against actual package weight and dimensions. Quoted in Canadian dollars, no FX conversion. The cheapest eligible service that meets your delivery deadline ships.

Cross-border

US cross-border in the same workflow

Shipments to the United States flow through the same fulfillment queue as domestic. CanShip auto-detects US destinations, generates the commercial invoice, applies UPS Canada's cross-border rate cards, and produces a single label.

Customs paperwork

Commercial invoice generation, automatic

For US and international destinations, CanShip auto-generates the commercial invoice required at customs. HS codes, country of origin, declared value, all pulled from your SKU metadata. No more printing PDFs and stuffing pouches.

Labels

4x6 thermal labels, bilingual for QC

Industry-standard 4x6 thermal labels printed directly from CanShip. Compatible with Zebra ZD420, Brother QL-1100, Dymo LabelWriter, and any thermal printer. Bilingual EN/FR labels for Quebec destinations.

Channel sync

Tracking writeback to Shopify, Amazon, Extensiv

The moment a UPS label prints, CanShip captures the tracking number and writes it back to the originating order in Shopify, Amazon, or Extensiv. Customer notifications fire automatically. Your client portals update instantly.

Setup (BYOC path)

Fifteen minutes from credentials to shipped order.

Below is the setup flow for bringing your own UPS Canada commercial account. Marketplace path is even simpler: toggle UPS on in CanShip's Carriers page and skip directly to shipping. About 30 seconds.

Step 1

Add your UPS Canada credentials

From CanShip's Carriers page, add your UPS Canada account number and API access credentials (OAuth client ID and secret, or legacy API user + password). Stored encrypted at rest, transmitted over TLS only.

Step 2

Test a label, including a cross-border one

Print a test label to validate domestic shipping, then a second test to a US address to validate commercial invoice generation. Account or contract issues surface here, before they affect production shipping.

Step 3

Ship orders

Set your UPS defaults (preferred service, account-level surcharges, third-party billing if applicable) and start shipping. Total setup including testing: about fifteen minutes.

Why this integration is different

UPS, the way Canadian operators actually use it.

Cross-border first-class
US cross-border isn't bolted on

Most US WMS handle UPS US fine but treat the Canadian side and cross-border as second-class. CanShip's UPS integration is built for Canadian operators shipping south every day. CAD-quoted rates, automatic commercial invoices, customs broker handoff.

Operator-built
We use it ourselves at our 3PL

Breakthrough Studio, our own 3PL in Metro Vancouver, ships UPS domestic and cross-border every day. When UPS changes a rate card, an API field, or a customs requirement, we feel it before customers do.

Multi-carrier rate shopping
Rate-shop UPS against Canada Post and FedEx

On Grow and above, every shipment compares UPS rates against your other connected carriers in real time. The cheapest eligible service that meets your delivery deadline wins. UPS where it's competitive, Canada Post or FedEx where they win.

Bilingual
Bilingual EN and FR labels

Quebec destinations get bilingual or French label markings per Canadian bilingual labeling conventions. Pro and Enterprise extend this to bilingual return labels and packing slips automatically.

Plan availability

Available on every CanShip plan.

Free tier
Marketplace-only, no account required

Free ships through CanShip's bulk UPS Canada account at our negotiated rates plus a transparent $0.50 + 6% per-shipment fee. No commercial account needed, no setup fees, no minimum volume.

Paid tiers
Bring your own, or opt into the marketplace

Starter, Grow, Pro, and Enterprise default to BYOC: your own UPS Canada commercial account, your negotiated rates, no per-shipment fee from us. Or opt into the CanShip marketplace per carrier (same $0.50 + 6% transparent fee as Free) and skip the account setup. Toggle either way, any time.

Honest about the edges

Two things to know.

We'd rather flag the practical limitations up front than have you discover them mid-peak. The two below cover almost all real-world questions Canadian operators ask about UPS.

Carrier-side rate limits

UPS API rate limits apply

UPS throttles their commercial API, especially during peak season. CanShip queues and retries, but if you ship thousands of orders in a five-minute window during Black Friday, expect UPS-side delays. We surface throttle status in the dashboard so you can watch it.

Customs brokerage

Cross-border duties and brokerage are between you and UPS

CanShip generates the commercial invoice and label, but customs duties, brokerage fees, and disbursement charges are handled by UPS directly with the recipient (or your account, depending on your billing terms). We don't intermediate.

Common questions

Quick answers about the UPS integration.

FAQ

Do I need a UPS commercial account?

Your call, on every paid tier. Bring your own UPS Canada account (BYOC, default, no fee from us) or opt into the CanShip marketplace per carrier (uses our bulk UPS account, transparent $0.50 + 6% per-shipment fee). On Free, no account needed, the marketplace is the default and only path.

FAQ

Does it handle US cross-border shipments?

Yes, fully. Auto-detects US destinations, applies UPS cross-border rate cards, generates the commercial invoice from your SKU metadata (HS codes, country of origin, declared value), and produces one combined label. The same fulfillment workflow as domestic.

FAQ

How does commercial invoice generation work?

When CanShip detects a US or international destination, the commercial invoice is generated from the order's SKUs, your SKU metadata (HS code, country of origin, weight), and the declared value. The PDF is included with the label printout for the carrier to physically attach.

FAQ

Can I rate-shop UPS against Canada Post and FedEx?

Yes, on Grow and above. CanShip queries each connected carrier in real time for every shipment and ships the cheapest eligible option that meets your delivery deadline and service preferences. UPS where it wins, Canada Post or FedEx where they win.

FAQ

Does it support UPS Worldwide?

Yes. UPS Worldwide Saver, Worldwide Express, and Worldwide Express Plus are all supported for international shipments, with the same automatic commercial invoice generation as cross-border US.

FAQ

Does UPS integration cost extra?

The integration itself is included on every plan. On BYOC: you pay UPS for shipping, you pay CanShip for the WMS, no per-label fees from us. On the marketplace path: a transparent $0.50 + 6% per-shipment fee, same as Free tier. No middleman, no hidden surcharges either way.
